Julia Creek the gateway town to the Gulf of Carpentaria

Hi I am back guys to tell you more news about where we are now which is a town called Julia Creek on the Flinders Highway.  It is near the Flinders River which is the longest river in Queensland. All the creeks and rivers are dry around here and it there is just dry grass called Flinders grass around.

At the information centre we saw a cool little animal called a Dunnart.  It looks like a mouse with a pink little nose, big round black eyes and little round ears.  It is a nocturnal marsupial and it was pretty small with sharp teeth.  We had a really good look at him and the lady fed him a meal worm and small piece of mince.  The Julia Creek Dunnart is an endangered animal and they are trying to breed more to help them stay alive.

The next day we went to a museum in the town and saw an old red train carriage, an old fire truck and a tractor.  There were also rooms of old doctor’s instruments, farm machinery and history photos of Julia Creek.  We then went back to our campsite where there is a lovely bore water creek. At Julia Creek there are no dams or permanent rivers for fresh water so they have to drill down into the earth for about a kilometre to get to underground water which then comes up to the surface at a temperature of 50 degrees Celsius and above.

Later in the day I saw three brolgas which are beautiful birds that look like cranes and are silver and white with a red head.  We heard honking noises outside our motorhome and when we looked there were a flock of brolgas flying away together.
We're off to Cloncurry tomorrow and then we are going to stay at a ghost town called Mary Kathleen to stay the night.

I'm off to bed now.

Au revoir
